March 4, 2022: Power Lunch Hour; Central Canal Aqueduct with Ernest Rogalla; Wiss Janney Elstner Assoc

March 4, 2022 @ 6:00 am - 11:30 pm

The Central Canal Aqueduct over Fall Creek in Indianapolis conveys most of Indianapolis’ water for treatment.  Built in 1909, the historic aqueduct is a four-span concrete structure with concrete arches that support the water channel above. The advanced age of the structure and as visible water leakage from the channel prompted Citizens Energy Group to conduct a detailed assessment of the aqueduct to inform future maintenance of this critical piece of infrastructure.

In partnership with Citizens Energy Group (CEG), Wiss Janney Elstner Associates (WJE) evaluated the condition of the concrete aqueduct using a combination of non-destructive evaluation (NDE) techniques, destructive testing, laboratory testing, and finite element analyses.  The condition of the structure was surprising in several ways, as was the correlation of NDE with actual conditions.  Following the investigation, WJE provided CEG with repair recommendations and estimates of probable cost for repairs.  This presentation includes a discussion of the investigation and recommendations.
