June 3, 2022: Power Lunch Hour: Citizens Reservoir Water Supply Project Update with Bruce Cooley

June 3, 2022 @ 6:00 am - 11:30 pm

Water supply of the future was captured to increase the resilience of the central Indiana water supply. Citizens Reservoir, a depleted rock quarry adjacent to Geist Reservoir, was developed by Citizens Energy Group. At approximately 230 ft deep, the quarry has a storage capacity of over 3 billion gallons. Two tunnels were blasted in the quarry walls to connect five, vertical-drilled shafts to an Intake Structure and a 30 MGD pump station—both built adjacent to the quarry. The pumping system will direct raw water from Citizens Reservoir to Geist Reservoir during drought-like conditions for downstream treatment. While the retired limestone quarry was conducive to maximize safe water storage and minimizing environmental impacts and capital expenditures, the quarry had unique construction challenges that required detailed planning and Owner-Contractor-Engineer coordination. This presentation includes a review and discussion on the project construction.
