Indiana Section American Water Works Association
Water Utillity Council Fall Advocacy Week

We’re launching the inaugural Indiana WUC Advocacy Week this fall.  Advocacy Week will enable WUC members to meet with legislators and discuss the importance of the Indiana water industry.

Why have an Advocacy Week?

Advocacy Week will help WUC build strong relationships with legislators, who make laws and regulations that govern the water industry. Just a few important reasons to participate:

  • Increased awareness of the water industry, which could mean more funding and assistance.
  • Increased credibility and capabilities of the water industry.
  • A stronger network of water utility leaders in Indiana.
  • You are the best advocate for the water industry, familiar with the health, economic and environmental benefits of clean drinking water in Indiana.
  • There is no better way to have your views and concerns heard in the Statehouse then by having legislators hear first-hand from you.

How Advocacy Week works

WUC members will set up a meeting or event with their legislators. Legislators will learn about you, your concerns and how the water industry affects their constituents.

To participate:

  • Invite your legislators to coffee or a meal.
  • Give legislators tours of the facility and the opportunity to meet employees.
  • Host a special event like an open house, facility tour, or grand opening. Ideas include:
    • SRF-funded project completion of a well, system, etc.
    • Grade school class tour of facility.
    • Employee recognition day.
    • Celebration of a milestone, such as customer satisfaction ratings, awards and special appointments, safety or efficiency accomplishments, etc.

More to come

In the coming weeks, we will provide you with the materials you need to make your meeting or event a success. Look for the following:

    • Tips for planning special events, as well as an event timeline and checklist.
    • Sample letters, invitations, media relations documents and thank you letters.
