Job Title: Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator

Qualifications: Completion of secondary education with post-secondary technical training
and work experience in wastewater treatment, mechanical maintenance and performing laboratory tests or equivalent combination.  Must possess a valid Class I Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator’s license and a valid Indiana Drivers License.

Description of Position: Under general supervision, operates a wastewater treatment plant consisting of comminutors, bar screens, lift stations, primary and secondary settling, chlorination, dechlorination, sludge digestion and aeration; operates pumps and valves to move sewage through various treatment processes and adjusts flow patterns; monitors and inspects plant and equipment for proper operation and makes necessary repairs.  Monitors water quality of plant effluent and receiving stream by drawing samples and performing laboratory tests.  Performs cleaning and maintenance of plant, equipment, lift stations, combined sewer overflows, screening devices, pumps, etc.

This full-time position is responsible for the planning and implementation of water utility construction projects. The incumbent coordinates, reviews and certifies the work of contractors and consultants to be in compliance with contractual terms and local, state, and federal requirements. Requires a Bachelors Degree in engineering plus 3-5 years of utility engineering design experience. Key Accountabilities:
Distribution/Outside Commercial:

Programs and directs the efficient and reliable operation, maintenance, protection and appearance of all pipelines, services, hydrants, valves and other appurtenances within the distribution system.

Determines type, size and location of property and equipment required for the efficient operation, maintenance and expansion of the distribution system.

Controls materials through the preparation and recommendation of economical and efficient programs to monitor and evaluate new and existing products and application procedures, purchasing administration, inventory control, supplier relations and contract integrity.

Assists in planning and construction of extensions and improvements to the distribution system.

Provides for meters and meter readings including installation, removal and repair, periodic testing and reading schedules.

Production:
Programs and directs the efficient and reliable operation, maintenance, protection and appearance of all water supply facilities, impoundments, watersheds, pumping, treatment, booster and storage facilities and properties.

Assists in planning and construction of new facilities.

Plans and prepares that portion of the Company budget within area of responsibility.

Manage employees and labor relations within area of responsibility. May serve as spokesman in union contract negotiations.

Prepares, files and maintains reports and records relating to the production and distribution of water and water services.

Develops a sound organization staffed with able and motivated employees and provides for or trains suitable replacements.

Assures that polices, procedures, programs, standards of performance and approved objectives are adhered to and/or achieved including those involving safety, affirmative action, community and labor relations.

Education: Bachelor's Degree in Business, Engineering or Science related field required.

Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Computer literacy. Ability to provide leadership and interpret and apply Company policies and procedures. Problem solving, planning, organizing and controlling skills.

Knowledge: Knowledge of water distribution system operations, engineering and construction concepts, accounting and budgeting principles.

Experience: Four (4) to six (6) years supervisory experience in water works or related field, three (3) of which are in distribution.

Certifications and Licenses: State Water and/or Waste Water license required by State.
